Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Serra Titiz, Founder of Mikado Sustainable Development Consulting and Future is Brighter Youth Platform, located in İstanbul, Turkey.

  • What’s your business, and who are your customers?

Mikado, acting with the mission of increasing the number of people and institutions that contribute to the sustainability of the world, works for a more responsible private sector, a sustainable and transparent civil society, and social transformation through social innovation. Its clients range from private sector companies to non-profit organizations, from local authorities to academic institutions. It is proud to be a B Corp company 🙂

Future is Brighter Youth Platform, on the other hand, is a vocational orientation platform that helps youth make better and more informed career, education, and life decisions. Companies sponsor and engage their employees as mentors, and students from host and newcomer communities are beneficiaries.

  • Tell us about yourself
I first started to work in the social sector at various NGOs with youth and women, and then I established Mikado as a social enterprise that crafts models for sustainable development. Future is Brighter Platform came afterwords, both entities work together under a hybrid business model where the company consults organizations, and the association reaches out to youth and volunteers.

What motivates me is the impact we create as a team every day with each and every project we execute. I established this organization as a “place to live and feed myself,” which then became a home for a team of inspirational change makers 🙂

  • What’s your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The biggest accomplishment is to have built and succeeded in maintaining a space where idealist people can work and where resources are matched with needs that generate constant impact in people’s lives.

  • What’s one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing was to be a social entrepreneur, to express and to legitimize yourself, as well as to have been ahead of the mainstream agenda most of the time, and the fact paving the way by yourself was a big challenge.

  • What are the top tips you’d give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Find a field/project/topic you are passionate about, dream about it, and then start living in it 🙂
